It seems Harper still has some money in the budget to plumb the depths of his misogyny and racism. Taking issue with the Federal court ruling that women can wear a niqab when taking the oath of citizenship, Harper has said he will appeal. After all, as he sees it,
"any violation of a charter right would be 'trivial' because the oath takes less than a minute to recite."
Trivial? I'm pretty sure the women to which this applies do not consider this a trivial matter. And I doubt Harper believes his own words, anyway.
Even more bizarrely -- and in a shameless display of irony -- Harper further justifies his opposition to this ruling by stating,
"This is a society that is transparent, open and where people are equal."
And he said it with a straight face.
