Trudeau ends use of Emergencies Act, says 'situation is no longer an emergency'
Prime minister says an inquiry into the deployment of the law will begin in 60 days
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is revoking the use of the Emergencies Act, the powerful legislative tool that was used to quash the protests and blockades that erupted in Ottawa and at border crossings over recent weeks. "The situation is no longer an emergency," Trudeau told a news conference. "We are confident that existing laws and bylaws are now sufficient to keep people safe." Trudeau said the Governor General will officially sign off on the revocation in the coming hours, ending the state of emergency. more https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-event-feb23-1.6361847

3. The precedent is set. He can invoke it again if necessary...
It'll, no doubt, be easier to do the next time.

4. Has it never been done before? It seems to have worked to end the blockade.

5. No. The law, passed in 1988, has never been used. I read it was considered...
for the COVID-19 pandemic. I havent read why JT ultimately decided against that use.

7. He didn't need it, as you can tell by the percentage of vaccinated people in our country.

9. It's predecessor The War Measures Act was used in 1970...
during the October Crisis in Quebec, it was Justin Trudeau's father Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau who used it then. The War Measures Act was repealed when The Emergencies Act was passed to replace it.

8. No, the members of parliament voted on Monday to agree with him utilizing it
He had another 3 weeks before he would have needed a renewal, it was good for 30 days.

10. Apparently he learned the senate was not going to support him and so he revoked it
before they could vote against him.
One of Trudeau's own senate appointees announced he would vote against continuation of the act. |
