Germany has the right idea. Ban them outright.
If you want to change policy, pressure your representatives and if that doesn't work, vote in people who will.

This shitstorm is a classic answer to that question.

(46,773 posts)Having lived in California, I have a very low opinion of ballot initiatives. They were intentionally difficult to understand and were almost always started by corporate interests or special interest groups as in the case of Prop 8 in 2008. I remember seeing signs in 2008 implying that Prop 8 was about education or free speech. I received flyers that implied that Barack Obama supported Prop 8 insuring support from the African American community.
We elect people to legislate and like you say, if they don't work out, you elect someone else. Most people don't have the time or the resources to make major legislative decisions.
This is the flyer I received two or three times.

(6,384 posts)perhaps a 60% target should have been set. Whichever way it went, a solid vote was necessary to maintain stability. As it is now, almost half the country is in disagreement with the vote and deeply unhappy.
It seems the referendum has created an enormous division, and ending a few political careers as well, which I'm sure nobody foresaw. Seems they didn't think much about consequences at all; just took it for granted it would be a Remain vote and all would somehow be well at the end.
What an unholy mess it's turned out to be.
