Cameron backs 'life means life' sentences for murderers

David Cameron has said "life should mean life" as the government considers US-style 100-year prison sentences for murderers and serious offenders.

The prime minister's comments come as the Conservatives consider alternatives to "whole-life" sentences.

The government is considering the plan after a European court ruled in 2013 that such sentences breached the European Convention on Human Rights.

The 100-year terms would allow sentence reviews, satisfying the court.

The proposed change in sentencing regulations comes as Conservative ministers prepare to publish reforms to the UK's human rights laws. They want Britain's Supreme Court to have the final say in cases relating to human rights, rather than the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg.

Evidently not.

Or perhaps to put it more accurately: Clegg is a lazy puppet and lets Cameron pull his strings, Cameron is a lazy puppet and lets his Ministers pull his strings, and his Ministers are mostly nutty or stupid or both, and do copy the ideas of the American Right. Duncan-Smith once co-authored an article on 'Compassionate conservativism' with Rick Santorum (no kidding!); Liam Fox advised the Romney campaign after being sacked as Minister, and probably had been collaborating with Republicans before that; and Gove appears to share advisors with Arne Duncan, who may be a nominal Democrat but is as RW as they come.
