New bid to block 'human rights' claims by foreign criminals

Changes designed to stop foreign offenders claiming they cannot be deported because of the "right to family life" win backing of 100-plus MPs .

Controversial human rights measures which allow foreign criminals to avoid deportation on human rights grounds could be consigned to history next week after tough new measures won cross-party backing.

The Telegraph can disclose more than 100 MPs have given their support to plans which will strip judges of the power to block deportations because criminals have family ties in this country.

However, a Government spokesman said the Home Office will stick with its own plan to tackle the problem, raising the prospect of a new rebellion by Tory backbenchers.

Under proposals tabled in the House of Commons, the Home Secretary - rather than the courts - will have the final say on whether an offender’s family links are strong enough to allow them to avoid deportation.
