Anyone familiar with connecting a laptop to TV?
I bought an auvio USB to HDMI adapter and loaded the software. I can get a picture from my laptop but only my desktop. I assume there is a setting but not sure what it would be.

(18,479 posts)...that you can get video out from your laptop to a desktop monitor using your USB to HDMI adapter but not from your laptop to your TV?

(87 posts)If so, investigate a WIRELESS connection, (assuming you have a wireless modem/wireless access point in your house).
Google this:
"Google Chromecast" $35 retail (if not on sale on some website, like Amazon.com)
Plug in the little device to your USB or HDMI port on your TV, follow instructions to set it up.
Watch Nextflix from your laptop or Youtube videos from your laptop to your TV.
Continue to use your laptop for other things while watching movies or Youtube or whatever on your TV set.
It's cheap and almost foolproof and fun.

(18,479 posts)If you play video on your laptop, does the video appear on both the laptop display and the TV?
Can you open a browser window (like IE or chrome) on your laptop and see the window or you TV screen?
If yes, can you play a youtube video in that browser and see it on your TV screen?

(37,540 posts)I tried cabling my laptop years ago and it was pretty crappy results. I now use a Chromecast dongle on my TV set and bluetooth from my laptop to the Dongle. Works really slick. You do need a TV with an open HDMI port, though.
If you can see the desktop on your TV, you are probably connected. If you have a .mov file does anything happen when you play it? How about a videosite like Youtube?

(217 posts)your computer is detecting the TV as an extra monitor and is extending the desktop to the new screen space.
If you try moving the mouse left or right, past the edge of the laptop screen, does it appear on the TV monitor?
Also, I'm not sure if this has been asked, but what version of windows are you running?

(55,981 posts)problem, "You are using extend mode rather than mirror mode." But I dont know what that means.

(8,543 posts)If you can't watch that, the easy way change that display setting is to hold the Windows key down and hit the P key. That should bring up a dialog box which allows you to choose: Duplicate, Extend, Projector Only, or Disconnect Projector. (In your case the "Projector" is your TV.)

It sounds like you are in Extend mode - if you want to show the same thing on your computer monitor and your TV switch it to Duplicate mode. If you need more detailed explanations/settings/help, you might want to check out this site:

(8,543 posts)Not really - but D is for 'Desktop' so they couldn't use that for 'Display'.
I forget all of those hot key combos, I only had it thrust into my consciousness again because of the YouTube video in my post. I just right-click the desktop to change video stuff.

(7,309 posts)You may not need a hard connection. If your TV is DLNA and your OS (Microsoft) has WiDi, you can use your TV has a second monitor without using an HDMI cable.
