Help! This old timer needs instructions re: iPad mini.

Last edited Sat Jan 3, 2015, 03:52 PM - Edit history (1)

Since I have had only a PC for years, I am stumped by the iPad my kids decided I needed for Christmas.
I went to the Apple tutorial, will go again, although it was good, there is too much for one session. This little gizmo is great but my skills are not.
Can someone please tell me how to close a site on this machine. I have managed to set things up and am studying the book I bought. If I go to DU, NECN, BBC.com etc, they still remain active. Heck, I don't even know how to describe what I need to know, I guess it is simple enough,---how to I close these sites?

On my PC, I just X out and the page is gone.
What the heck do I do with the iPad to get rid of the site I just visited?

So different, my simple brain cannot compute!

I think the only currently available ipods are the touch, nano, and shuffle.

The IPAD, however comes in MINI (and the standard) model.

If you are referring to an IPAD, are you asking how to move from one website to another while using the default Safari browser? OR are you asking how to close various open apps (so as not to waste battery life)? If the latter, this video shows you how to do so if you are using IOS version 7 (version 8 may be a bit different, but it will be similar): http://ios.wonderhowto.com/how-to/close-apps-ipad-mini-running-ios-7-0148769/

My question is about Safari and access to various internet sites. I may go to various web sites, read what I need to and then would like to close the site and go to another.. Can't see how to close one out before going to another site and can't seem to find what to 'click' on to close one and go somewhere else.
There seems to be no explanation regarding all the little icons at the tops of page. Boxes, arrows, whatever. The use of these little -top of page- icons is not explained in my book, nor was it addressed at the tutorial. I wonder if I have to find a 14 year old to work me thru this.

I will review the site you posted any maybe I can get an idea about what I should be doing.
There are so many things this iPad(mini) will do and I will address them one at a time but I need to find out how to use the basic functions. Things like the camera, adding apps, calendar and all that other stuff will come in time. I just need to know how to close web sites I visit via Safari.

You just swipe the program up. If you hit the little button that brings the ipad to life, so to speak, twice fast, it shows you what is running. Just swipe what you want off, up.

I hope that makes sense

This is, however, separate from your Safari issue.

Here's some explanation from Apple of what you are experiencing with Safari compared to previous browsers you've used:

When you use Private Browsing, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information. Each tab in a Private Browsing window is isolated from the others, so websites you view in one tab can’t see your cookies from websites in another tab. This helps prevent websites you're logged in to from tracking you as you browse.

So, in other words, you don't have to "close" from one website to another... Just use your bookmarks to move from one to another, essentailly.
