New iPod mini, random 'ping' sound.

This gift to me is doing some funny things. I am computer illiterate and my kids, who gave me this gift, think I am nuts. At random times, this cute little iPod mini will give off a 'ping' sound. There are no e-mails, or anything else I can find to tell me what this is about.

I will be going to the Apple store for another tutorial but until I do so, I'd love to know what this sound signifies. Any ideas?
Thanks

for recent notifications.
You can get there by doing a downward swipe from the top center of the screen (up by the clock).

If you don't have any recent notifications in the Notification Center, you might have to go through Settings/Notifications and turn off apps with sounds that are on, in a process of elimination. Go to Settings/Notifications, you can configure what apps are allowed to give a sound.
