what the heck is wrong with my Nero burning ROM?
I have it with Nero 7 Ultra Edition. I've used it before and it's worked fine, but tonight every time I try to open it I immediately get that damn Windows message that says there was some unidentified problem and it has to close. I've tried it about 10 times and the same thing happens. I uninstalled Nero 7 and reinstalled it with the disc and the damn thing is still doing it! I also noticed that when I uninstalled it I still had a lot of Nero files on my computer in various places. I also noticed in reinstalling Nero 7 that it already knew my security key and plugged it in for me.
Anyone know what the heck is going on here? It's driving me bonkers.
Is there some free (and safe!) burning ROM software I can use instead if I can't get this problem solved?

Make sure you decline the option to install any additional adware by selecting
"Custom Installation" and unchecking the optional software.

(11,065 posts)All I want to do is make copies of some of my video DVD's so I'll have backups if the originals get too scratched to work. The originals are all homemade DVD's (I'm not trying to copy purchased DVD's).
With my Nero burning ROM (when it worked!) I could copy a CD or DVD and burn it onto a blank disc all without having to put the copied info from the original disc onto the computer and then using that to burn onto the blank disc all in a few short minutes.

(26,366 posts)which is fine for me since I only have 1 DVD drive, so copying
the DVD to an image file, putting in a blank DVD then copying the file
to the disk is what works.

(3,655 posts)Super easy. You can burn a disc by just dragging the file(s) onto the desktop icon. You won't go back to Nero after using this. I have had nearly zero bad discs using CDburnerXP
runs on:
Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / Windows7 / XP64 / Vista64 / Windows7 64 / Windows8 / Windows8 64

(11,065 posts)And it's worked just fine on this computer before and the one before this one for years.
You know what else is really weird that I can't figure out for the life of me... for years I was able to choose to make the resolution smaller or larger and change the bit rate, etc. through the edit video option when making a video but for some mysterious reason I can't do that anymore. And I've only ever had Nero 7 and never did any upgrades or anything.
In the past year or so I've also suddenly been getting pixalation artifacts that's never happened before. Geez, it's like Nero 7 has had a mind of it's own on my computer or something. I'm getting to the point where I think I need to just use something else, and when I can afford to upgrade to a much newer Nero version. Nero 7 goes back to 2005.

(5,264 posts)Have you updated your video drivers? Doesn't make much sense, but maybe the newer drivers don't like Nero 7.

(11,065 posts)I don't think I updated them on this computer, but everything was installed that I needed by the saintly computer fix-it dude who sold this one to me after my other one blew up. Gave me an incredible price for it too.
How does one go about updating the drivers anyway? I haven't had to do that myself in so long I can't even begin to remember how.
