New Laptop and Windows 10 - Not able to make Recovery USB

My approximately 3 year laptop was experiencing problems booting up into Windows. I thought it might be time for an upgrade so I purchased a Toshiba with Windows 10. I followed the directions but was unable to create a recovery USB even with two different thumb drives. A totally unhelpful message that the operation cannot be completed is the only feedback. Microsoft website comments board shows that others have had problems with other PCs like HP and Dell. I read some 15 line workarounds - definitely not worth the effort.

I am keeping my old laptop and reinstalling the factory setting. The Toshiba goes back. I feel that this is such a flaw that I do not want to invest additional time in it.

From my little time with Windows 10 I am convinced that I want to stay with my Windows 7. It is very confusing and unhelpful. I don't want a touch screen operating system on a laptop.

I just hope I can find a refurbished with Windows 7 once my old laptop gives up the ghost.

When my old desktop gave me too many headaches, last October I bought a refurbished HP with Win 7 OS via Amazon. It cost about $200. No mouse, monitor, or keyboard because I didn't need them. It was delivered in three days, free shipping, and I don't even have Prime.

HP dc7900 SFF Desktop Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD Burner, Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit Computer
Sold by Computer Combination
Condition: Used - Very Good $198.00

I had purchased a Dell laptop with lots of bells and whistles in April of '14 with OS 8.1. I hated it from the beginning but I've been told that OS 10 is better. After ignoring the machine for 6 months, I tried again. Because of major problems with the laptop, that I spent dozens of hours unsuccessfully trying to rectify, I had to give up and call a local tech repair guy. He said he prefers Windows 7 to both 8, 8.1, and 10, and I should wait at least six months to upgrade to 10 because there are so many bugs. In addition, and this is important, Windows 10 has absolutely no security in regards to their tracking and gathering your information. Everything on your computer is accessible to them, and you give them permission just by downloading the OS. Email content, web searches, blog posts, everything. So I'm staying with 8.1 for now, and might download the classic shell, which emulates Windows 7.

The repair guy is going to clean what needs cleaning and fix what needs fixing, remove all retail security programs and install a super-duper security program -- all for $100 to $150 max. Not bad.

My brand new, 3 day old, Win10 laptop fried when McAfee said it found a trojan in an app I downloaded.

It hung, and wouldn't reboot after I forced it to shut down. Dead!

So I started playing with function keys on startup, hoping to get into safe mode, or something like it, but what I got was better. A screen eventually popped up offering to restart from scratch, and it did exactly that. A few hours later I had a brand new machine, presumably coming from that D drive.

Of course, I had to reinstall all the programs I put in there, but I had the option of saving my data (which is backed up anyway).

Keep up your love affair with 7 if you must (you've got a lot of company) but after I found out how to hide the cartoon screen in 8.1, it became the most stable and friendly OS I've ever used, and 10 is even better.
