Computercide by Champagne

At the graduation party last night, one of the guitarists opened his case and knocked a glass of champagne onto my laptop computer.

Today the screen is totally black- no light when I plug in the charger.

Questions
1. Can I ever retrieve the pictures I had on it?
2. Can it be refurbished or is it worth it?
3. What's a good $500-ish computer?

350 will get you a good laptop from Compaq or Acer. To me brand no longer matters CK_John May 2012 #4

You can plug the drive into an external USB case. The laptop's probably a loss. HopeHoops May 2012 #6

your best best may be to try to get the harddrive out of there and see if it survived. you can get a very inexpensive SATA to USB external HDD enclosure and try to hook it up to a friend's computer and see if it spins up.

good luck.

something like this should work for you :

everything inside is built in the same factories.

New fad of large hard drives is a waste and are technical failure prone. The average HD usage is 30GB unless your into video or music collection.

You need 3GB of memory, 120GB hard drive, and 15.6in screen runs around 350 at wallyworld.

On your current machine remove the battery hit with a hair dryer for about 5-8 min.

Lineup someone with a PC who will let you connect their usb keyboard, mouse and monitor (if your current laptop has an vga connector). This may pinpoint what is not working.

Might be a lost cause since the machine may have been powered up while wet. As a rule, liquids in and of themselves have no impact on the electronics. It's when you apply power to a wet circuit that does the damage.
