Sometimes stuff like this will clear up if you clear Chrome history...

When you submit a message, there's a filter that reads it and replaces bracketed expressions with the corresponding HTML tags (or more often CSS) before passing this back to the browser for display. Sometimes, such as during debugs, a programmer may turn this off so that this particular filter doesn't get invoked as part of a pipeline, and then may inadvertently forget to turn it back on again.
