More "shiny toys" for CHaS DU'ers: re-created vintage AIM, AOL, ICQ, Yahoo

Hi lurkers and members of CHaS,

Before anyone asks me, you do NOT have to use any of this or download any of this. Please relax. Those four programs are all totally voluntary to use, so please ignore this if you don't like to play with "shiny tech toys".

More "shiny toys" for you to play with, as indicated in the subject line. I learned of all these here: What Ever Happened to AIM ?

The main download link is here: http://iwarg.ddns.net/phoenix/index.php?action=downloads You might wish to use a "sandbox" to ensure security or just scan them for malware.

Please do NOT ask me for help. I am just as ignorant as the rest of you about all this. If you have some spare time on your hands and like to play around with re-creations of vintage 1990's technology, here you go.

Apparently AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) went kaput forever on December 15th, 2017. I am surprised it lasted that long, around 20 years or so.

Enjoy, my fellow techy DU'ers !

The first few years on AOL I used my first two initials and my last name. But then it
got to where I wanted more privacy. By that time a lot of AOL screen name were like
Bob123 or Mary789. So when I signed up to DU almost twenty years ago I thought I
would mock some of the AOL style user names that were in use at the time.

The MSDOS version of AOL was based on Geoworks.

I have emulations of my favorite old computers just one or two clicks away on my Linux Desktop, going back to the late 'seventies. Blame it on my OCD or something.

My favorite computer of all time was my 8 bit Atari XL which I'd upgraded with additional memory. I also modified the floppy disk drive for higher speeds. The XL still works. Alas the disk drive does not. But it all lives on in emulation.

I was still an occasional troublemaker on AOL when I first signed up at Democratic Underground February 16, 2002.

I've been a resident of the internet since the late 'seventies. I remember, with horror, The Eternal September.
