Windows 8 ate my apps
Not the apps on the Windows 8 tiles mind you, just the desktop apps and all of my installed programs. I've been using this new laptop as though it was Windows 7 - only without the handy search bar. One week after purchase and registration, it "refreshed" Windows and left me with all the game crap that I removed.
Has this happened to anyone else?

(8,601 posts)Now that I got that out of the way, it sounds like your computer chose to restore itself to an earlier state just because it somehow could.
This may be due to something installed on your computer by the manufacturer, is my first guess. Mind you I'm no expert though.
For the benefit of other possible responders, you should include a little more about what brand of computer you have, and maybe list any supplied programs which are supposed to guard the "health" of your system, if you're aware of any.
Good luck getting this sorted out!

(37,457 posts)There is a feature where you can refresh your original install minus user-installed apps, so my only guess so far is that it got activated somehow.
If you don't get an answer here, I'd try this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance?tm=1357888419910
Good luck to you.

(18,479 posts)...is that you used the option to "restore to factory" option.
If so, the PC has exactly the apps and programs it came with.
hope this helps

(9,110 posts)and I'd been seeing notices for a couple of days about Windows refreshing in 2 days, then 1 day, and then when I tried to reboot during my effort to get my iPod recognized today, it refreshed without warning and rebooted minus everything that I'd installed and bookmarked. I didn't imagine it would remove anything. What was the point?
This laptop has some really nice features like the backlit keyboard, but the sound and camera are pretty horrible. And this strange factor of the mouse pad zooming in and out without my intention.
I'm wondering if the camera can be improved upon.... I should just return it, but I'm giving it another couple of days.

(9,110 posts)And at this point I've pretty much reinstalled what they removed. I still have no idea why this was done. According to this link they actually did a reset. I had no say in the matter.
I'm moving on. Windows 8 is not for me.

(9,110 posts)I burned a cd before the "reset/refresh" and now I opened itunes and a window popped up saying the burner was either not working or gone. Windows Media Player doesn't seem to want to import the music I just purchased in the itunes store. So I'm sort of stuck because I don't want to lose all the music on my ipod - which I'll do because it's not recognized by the new computer. I either lose it all and start over, which I think I'll do in order to get Fiona Apple on there. I just heard her sing tonight at Largo in L.A. and am most anxious to have her sing along the highway to San Diego tomorrow....
