Is it the monitor or is it the graphics card or something else causing this.

When I wake the computer from sleep the screen isn't at the 1440X900 any more. I have to restart to get it to work. The setting doesn't show in the monitor preferences.

Sometimes the monitor won't start, and I noticed sometimes it will start but will shut down when I boot the computer.

Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, the monitor turns off.

1440X900 is the only setting that works.

3. Great - I'm posting on a MacMini - so we are on the same page.

I'm assuming that the native resolution of LG is 1920x1080 (ie a "16 " ) monitor. 1440x900 is a standard 16:10 apple resolution - I have a 1080p monitor, but 1440x600 in on my resolution list , it's the native resolution of a 13" MacBook air - and has been around since the 17" MacBooks.

I have found apples HMDI to DVI can be a bit flaky. In the end, I bought a MiniDP to DVI adapter. However, the HDMI route should still work.

1. Apple always starts by saying, resetting the parameter RAM . Shut down, then restart holding down Apple-Option P R and keep holding the keys down through four startup chimes.

2. The next advice given, is to boot in safe mode - holing down shift. Look at the resolutions again.

3. Leaving aside the (1, 2) boilerplate - the best way to see if's a software issue is - Create a new user, In Users and Groups control panel. Call it anything - like Test. When you log into that account for the first time, you will have a pristine set of user preferences, including display preferences.

I'd suggest, creating the new user, then shutting down. After restart, select Test as the user. Then see if the resolutions behave. If they do, you can think about migrating data, or replacing preferences.

If it's not fixed, it's more likely hardware. If you post back, I can suggest more steps.

not I will create a new one.

I think this started when I upgraded to GIMP 2.8. It was a mess. That's unusual for a GIMP, but he problems were fixed quickly. Maybe I should trash GIMP's preferences to see if that has an effect. Ack! They've changed everything. Can't find the gimp preferences.

The problem only happened once today.

If it's only happened today, you can roll back the changes.

6. It's been going on for over a month. It started in early after downloading GIMP 2.8.4.

I'm using v2 and it is bug free.

I guess I can restore before downloading of that version.

computer and tried to turn it on and it wouldn't turn on.

I unplugged it from the wall, waited then plugged it back in. It worked. I plugged it back into the computer and booted the computer. It has worked well since.

I think the monitor is on a glide path to the recycling center.
