Didnt know where to ask this, so ill give it a go here

yay for you guys!

anyway

i was just curious about domain name registration..

ive noticed alot of sites that have fake address and/or other fake contact information on their registration..

is this illegal?

one would think if not itd make it easier for people to smuggle money and have dummy corporations?

sorry if im asking in the wrong place, didnt know where else to post!

thanks

Legally suppose to have a real name and contact info - if not the isp can be contacted to find out 2Design Jan 2012 #4

Yes it is illegal. You're required to verify the contact information on a regular basis. HopeHoops Jan 2012 #6

For most types of domains there are services where you can pay a little extra to keep the info private. In that case the contact info of the privacy service will show up in the public lookup instead of your personal address. That's legal.

Or did you mean a different kind of 'fake'?

Like, made up contact name... false address that doesnt exsist in the city provided.. fake phone number..

i know what you mean about paying to get that info private , but its not listed as private or as a contact at some company..
just fake, made up stuff.

not necessarily by you but it is a Fed law I believe - go do a search on the main sites Network something to find the rules or look on Wikipedia about domain registrars

I've got 70+ sites, so it's a pain in the ass, but my information is correct (and always has been) so I usually put the request for update in the "get to it later" file and never get to it. Falsifying it is against federal law and also violates ICANN rules (which can result in the DNS servers blacklisting the site). Don't just report the site, call GoDaddy, get a human on the line, and make THEM file an internal report.

Welp I got a reply, and theyve now made their domain contacts private.

and of course, its GoDaddys privacy service they are using.

it was that honestgirlscouts.com

the website with that girl telling people not to buy girl scout cookies...

they are totally a front for some whackjob right wing hate group ... they even say that girl scouts has been taken over by planned parenthood in order to get girls to have more abortions..

was really hoping i could cause some trouble for them..

but it looks like instead of warning them, godaddy just offered to help them for some money.

figures.

ironic that the people use the registrar that uses half naked girls to advertise while saying girl scouts is too sexual.

thats conservatives for ya tho

UPDATE:
But unfortunately for them they didnt update the other two domains they got when they registered. honestgirlscouts.org and honestgirlscouts.us both have the old fake contact info.

heres some of it

Registrant Name: First Last
Registrant Organization: The Universe
Registrant Address1: 123 Main Street
Registrant City: Monterey Park
Registrant State/Province: California
Registrant Postal Code: 90063
Registrant Country: United States
Registrant Country Code: US
Registrant Phone Number: +1.6266763233
Registrant Email: riedley@earthlink.net

obviously the names fake, and i tried to look up the address and nothing can find it .. so i assume its not there.. lol.. i havent tried the number yet.

So, should i try to contact someone other than godaddy? and if so who? i originally had emailed Network Solutions about it because frankly back when i got on the internet they were the people ya went too and i cant break the habit... lol... but they told me id have to tell the websites registrar.. which apparently does nothing.. so , is there something else i can do?

The registrar: GoDaddy.com
The web site host: GoDaddy.com

Well, that does not look promising... Keep pounding on them....
