Peacock polarizes Oakland neighborhood with shrill shriek

Peacock polarizes Oakland neighborhood with shrill shriek

OAKLAND, Calif. - In a society already filled with discord and friction, the residents of one North Oakland neighborhood can add one more polarizing problem to the list: A wild peacock who recently moved in.

"It's completely divided the neighborhood," said Jesse Tieger, whose home is near the peacock.

"People are taking a stance on being pro-peacock or anti," said Amanda Nimmo.

Nimmo is firmly in the pro-peacock camp. She and her son visit him regularly where he has made himself at home in a neighbor's yard on Occidental Street.

"We make it an activity to walk down. We see a lot of other neighborhood kids too that are from the area...to see something in the wild that is a little bit unusual and unique to our neighborhood.

Somebody either turned this guy loose, or he escaped. They can fly.

One of my fondest memories of being a kid and visiting my grandparents in South Carolina, was of their pet peacock. I'd lay in bed in the early morning, pine-scented breeze coming in the open window, and the peacock would be sounding off. They always said, he gets more noisy when he's looking for a hen.

Peacocks are very territorial and Corvettes are very shiny. The body of a Corvette is fiberglass. So, some folks had just bought a brand new Corvette and parked it in the driveway. Their pet peacocks, seeing their reflection and assuming it was an intruder went to town. Tore the shit out of that car. Wouldn’t have believed if I hadn’t seen it myself.

It terrorized the horses with its screams. Since it liked to roost on the peak of the roof, that meant there was no way to predict when it would scream and it was dangerous to anyone handling one of the spooked horses when it did.

I tried to get animal control to come capture it and they referred me to a wildlife rescue group (that the county had just decided to not fund anymore) - I refused to make them come out since it was a released domestic fowl not native to this country therefore it was not covered under the mission of the wildlife refuge charter.

One of my client's husband was a police officer and he volunteered to hunt the peacock and shoot it. He never managed to get close enough, but the peacock apparently found a new place to live because he didn't come back.

Peacocks are beautiful, but they are noisy and a nuisance. I'm glad there is no longer one here.
