Court file: Rock music led suspect to burn dad's house

An El Paso arson suspect told investigators she set her father's home on fire because of messages in the heavy-rock music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, a court document stated.

Fire Department investigators arrested Christina Paz, 29, soon after she allegedly set an early-morning fire that seriously damaged her father's home in the Cielo Vista area last week. No one was injured in the blaze.

Paz faces a felony charge of arson of a habitation and remains jailed in lieu of posting $20,000 bond.

It is really difficult to direct people's responses using the arts in any meaningful way. Imagery, music, literature and all the rest just don't work like that. There just isn't any direct causality between the arts and any given set of actions by those exposed to them.

If the suspect set fire to a house it wasn't because she was listening to that music, it was because she was the kind of person who enjoys listening to that music. She was looking for something when she listened to the music, and she was looking for something when she set the house on fire. Blaming the music for what she did is like blaming her shoes.
