Dumb Criminals: Dallas Police Say $10K Smoker Stolen For "$75 Worth Of Pot"
Some 36 hours after the Dallas Police Associations massive $10,000 smoker was stolen, its back home and two men are behind bars, suspected of having driven off with the recent acquisition.
DPA First Vice President Fred Frazier said Sunday morning that the smoker, which has been used at fundraisers and fallen-officer events, was recovered at 4:30 this morning at a house in the 2700 block of Carpenter Avenue a dope house, said Frazier. Patrol officers spotted the truck seen hauling off the smoker in surveillance-cam video.
Said Frazier, the suspects told officers a dope dealer put them up to it because they were selling it to a guy who has a barbecue joint on nearby Hatcher Street. They got $75 in dope in exchange for stealing the smoker, Frazier said.
According to a police report, the smoker was taken some time around 9:30 Friday night, when thieves cut the chain on the security gate behind DPA HQ at 1412 Griffin Street, backed up a white pickup to the trailer holding the smoker and drove off with it. Surveillance-camera footage captured this image of the truck used in the theft.
A Dallas police spokesperson confirms two suspects are in custody, but their names have not yet been released.
Frazier said the truck is ostensibly for a lawn service owned by a known drug dealer. But its just a front, he said. They dont cut grass. They use the truck to commit thefts and burglaries.
