Constipated goldfish operated on by North Walsham vet

Constipated goldfish operated on by North Walsham vet

A goldfish lover from Norfolk paid hundreds of pounds in vets' fees when his pet became constipated.

The owner took his ailing fish to Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham where vets told him it was constipated and an operation would cost about £300.

Vet Faye Bethell used anaesthetised water to knock out the goldfish before removing the blockages.

"At the end of the day they're all pets and everybody does have a commitment to their pet," Miss Bethell said.

"[The goldfish] was constipated because he had a lump blocking his bottom, rather than because of his diet or any other reason," she said.

He'd constantly bloat and float upside down in the tank, so it became a habit of giving him a squeeze every day to help him pass the gas. Basically, I was assisting a goldfish to fart.

Eventually, I felt his quality of life was too far gone, so I Googled ways to humanely kill a goldfish, and found a recommendation to freeze him, as it was supposed to be painless. So, into a cup of water, into the freezer he went.

Hours later, I take out the cup and leave it on the counter. Apparently, it hadn't frozen completely solid, and Mr. Goldfish had just enough liquid water left to survive his brush with death, because when I came back later the cup had thawed and the fish was still swimming!

I felt too bad to try killing him again, so I put him back in the aquarium. However, from then on, whenever he started to float and I came over to squeeze him, he started swimming like hell, frantically trying to right himself, like he was saying "No, no, I'm fine, don't try to kill me again!"
