Sherrod Brown Wins National Title as ‘Progressive Hero’

With title, Brown receives final endorsement from Democracy for America
Burlington, VT – Today, Democracy for America (DFA), announced that Sen. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, won DFA’s final endorsement and title as the nation’s Senate Progressive Hero. The Ohio senator beat out Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the title through the organization’s month-long contest among its members.
“Sherrod’s a true progressive fighter and he’s embroiled in a tough battle against a ‘Yes Man’ of the Tea Party,” Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America, said. “Ohioans are fed up with Republican policies harming their families, their jobs, and their future. We’re proud to call Sherrod DFA’s Senate Progressive Hero and our national membership will help him win this November. With Sherrod in the Senate for a second term, we can count on him to lead the next generation of progressive leaders on issues that matter.”
"I am honored to receive this title from Democracy for America, and I am proud to be recognized as a progressive. Being progressive to me means doing the right thing to move our country forward," said Senator Sherrod Brown. “That's why I fought to rescue the auto industry, and I am proud to fight every day to protect our jobs and to put a stop to China's cheating. It means fighting for affordable health care for all and ensuring every student has the access to a quality, affordable education. It means standing by folks who work hard, play by the rules, and deserve to be part of a strong middle class. Thank you again for this award, and I look forward to continue serving Ohioans and advancing the progress we've made the last six years.”
DFA held the contest from September 10 through October 1, asking its national membership to choose the organization's favorite progressive hero. In the final week, Sen. Brown came from behind to beat Sen. Sanders. Rep. Keith Ellison won Progressive Hero in the House while Sen. Scott Brown and Rep. Paul Ryan were chosen by DFA members as the congressional villains of 2012.
