I am glad Democrats are stepping up on this important issue. I included what Mother Jones says is the 1st comment from the NRA below. Remember when they came out guns a barreling after Sandy Hook. They sure have changed their tune.

The day after the shooting that killed 10 people at Oregons Umpqua Community College, Hillary Clinton called for a national movement strong enough to rival the National Rife Association, which she described as an intense, dedicated group of gun lobbyists who scare politicians and say, We will vote against you.
Clinton, who has made new gun restrictions a regular feature of her speeches on the campaign trail, addressed the shooting at a rally in Florida on Friday.
In other recent appearances, Clinton has advocated specifically for universal background checks on gun-buyers an initiative that failed in Congress under President Obama.
.................
What is wrong with us that we cant stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby and the gun manufacturers that they represent? she said to cheers from the crowd..............
Clinton promised that, if elected, she would never relent in trying to pass new gun measures. She acknowledged that passing new measures which Obama was unable to do even in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School would be what she called a political mountain to climb.

The NRA's first tweet since the massacre in Oregon was about a kid's gun program http://bit.ly/1hfU1nc

(11,197 posts)Were going to have our young adults sit down with EddieEagle the gun safety mascot and that will solve the problem? What a sorry joke.
Why do crimes such as this only seem to plague America? Why not the UK? Or Belgium?, Or France? Or Italy? Why just in America? Is EddieEagle the problem? These other countries with so few gun homicides and massacres don't have an "EddieEagle" so that must be it. Kill the damn eagle.

(57 posts)We need to establish a "Gun Safety Pledge" in this country and let office seekers know that if they don't sign it, they don't get our votes.
Background checks, waiting periods, regulations for gun shows, assault weapon bans, etc.----we would need a pledge with succinct and specific ideals.
Very proud of Barack for his powerful response this week and it is great to see Hillary step up to the plate and issue the long awaited challenge to the NRA!

(161 posts)The first step is have a nationwide gun control standard.
In my home state of NY, it took three years (and significant cost) to get a hand gun permit to purchase the graduation pistol for my West Point son. Even taking into consideration no criminal record, record of community service and former combat veteran army officer. My character reference were the County Attorney, Parish Priest, Police Chief and County Legislator.
If I was not law abiding, I could just drive to a state (say VA or NC) load up all the Mac 10 s from a gun show and drive home.
Factoid, What is the State with the lowest rate of crime committed with unlicensed hand guns. Answer Hawaii, because you can't take the weapon on the plane without a permit. Tells you something
