Can Bernie Sanders Win the Love of a Party He Scorns?

Can Bernie Sanders Win the Love of a Party He Scorns?
The long, troubled history of Bernie Sanders and the 'ideologically bankrupt' party whose White House nod he now seeks.

By MICHAEL KRUSE and MANU RAJU August 10, 2015

"You don’t change the system from within the Democratic Party.”

“My own feeling is that the Democratic Party is ideologically bankrupt.”

“We have to ask ourselves, ‘Why should we work within the Democratic Party if we don’t agree with anything the Democratic Party says?’”

Bernie Sanders, everybody—the same Bernie Sanders who is running to become the Democratic Party’s candidate for president of the United States.

Period.

Is it any wonder that his supporters walked out on the rest of the democratic party candidates at the JJ dinner?

They hold the party, them and us in contempt. And all this BS about Bernie never changing his views is also a load of **** and here is the proof!

I think his followers walking out of the JJ after he was done opened up a lot of democrats eyes.

They could care less about anyone but Bernie.

The Bernie movement is mostly Paulites and Nader fans who have no intentions of ever supporting any democrat period.

And Burnie is still not a democrat...He just plays one on TV!

Oh there are a few well intentioned actual democrats drinking the koolaid thinking Burnie will support Hillary if she wins the nomination, no doubt.

But they are in for a rude awakening after Super Tuesday I bet. The democratic party is being taken for a ride by Bernie and fans.

Just wait and see.

That's what I've seen from some of the purists in the Sanders camp recently on DU.

I cannot relate!

Perhaps the credit I was giving to Sanders and his supporters was misplaced. I was trying to understand their behavior, and attributed it to just being over-exuberant or politically clumsy. At times I felt sympathetic to the frustration they were probably feeling.

Now I'm beginning to rethink things. With regard to Sanders, his candidacy and his supporters, my views are (dare I say) evolving, based on a better understanding of what their motivation appears to be.

The notion that Sanders' supporters want to destroy the party so that they can rebuild the party (as absurd as it originally sounded to me) is beginning to seem more likely. On the surface it seems unthinkable that anyone would want to intentionally hand over control to the Republicans just to make things worse, and simply to be the catalyst that will cause an "uprising" and "overthrow" of the Democratic Party. It just didn't make sense to me.

It's an extreme concept. But as the evidence continues to accumulate, and their behavior continues to become increasingly extreme, it may be that there is some truth to the theory.

I was wondering about his lack of support from Congress as well after being there for years.

This story tells the reason why for sure.

"Berning down the house" It never occurred to me , but I ain't the sharpest tack in the box.

But there may be something to it now....the vitriol against HRC and her supporters, the revolution talk, the promises not to vote for her if nominated. Berning bridges, the lack of congressional support from his colleagues in the Senate. And I really am starting to understand as well, SOME of the BSers are not Democrats.

My county was solid GOP about 20 years ago. We have worked, year after year, race after race, organizing, campaigning, scraping by with minimal funds, to make it competitive. We are on a trajectory to turn it blue within a few more cycles.

And, now, here comes Bernie and his cult of personality, who have sneered at us for all those years, holding themselves morally superior to those of us who got our hands dirty with real world politics while they kept their heads in the clouds and now, they expect to reap all the benefits of our hard work.

I welcome anyone who wants to join the Democratic Party. But, they ought to come with some measure of respect, not with sneers and insults.
