In Flint Debate, the Clinton-Sanders Clash Gets RougherTHE NATION
By Joan Walsh
Take the issue of the 2008 auto bailout, perhaps the thorniest of the debate, on the eve of Tuesdays Michigan primary. The funds, which saved an estimated 1.5 million jobs, were tucked inside the odious Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARPbetter known as the bank bailoutwhich Sanders opposed. So he voted against the double bailout bill.
Sunday night he stood by that vote, though he reminded Clinton and the crowd that hed worked to get Congress to take up the auto bailout on its own. That didnt work out, but Sanders still defended his anti-bailout vote:
If you are talking about the Wall Street bailout, where some of your friends destroyed this economy, when billionaires on Wall Street destroyed this economy, they went to Congress and they said, please, well be good boys, bail us out. You know what I said? I said, let the billionaires themselves bail out Wall Street.
Clintons retort is telling:
The Bush administration negotiated the deal. Were there things in it that I didnt like? Would I have done it differently? Absolutely. But was the auto bailout money in itthe $350 billion that was needed to begin the restructuring of the auto industry? Yes, it was. So when I talk about Senator Sanders being a one-issue candidate, I mean very clearlyyou have to make hard choices when youre in positions of responsibility. The two senators from Michigan stood on the floor and said, we have to get this money released. I went with them, and I went with Barack Obama. You did not. If everybody had voted the way he did, I believe the auto industry would have collapsed, taking four million jobs with it.
That exchange sums up the nightand the entire campaign.

(3,825 posts)One issues voters have practically destroyed this country. Sometimes we have to take something we don't like to get something that is the right thing to do. Keep your eye on the prize. Like my father told me so many years ago, do the right thing, even if it is the hardest thing you will ever have to do. Hillary did that. Putting the auto industry out of business could never happen and have our economy survive.

This is a great article detailing the whole sordid cronyism.

I find Bernie himself to be much more nuanced and palatable than some of his online supporters.

(2,025 posts)As an outsider and a neutral who doesn't care who wins as long as it's not the Republican I have to say that some of Sander's supporters are truly repulsive. I think he's quite a decent bloke but some of them are actually putting people off, I've seen it on another forum.
My main fear about Sanders is that the expectations are too great, and the most vociferous yahoos attached to his campaign will be just as vociferous in their condemnation if two years into a Sander's presidency he's not lived up to those expectations. And he can't, regardless of how well intentioned and hard working he may be, because that's not how the system works. The obstructionists will still be there whoever wins.

Whether that particular poster is one or not, I do have major suspicions about some here. I have lurked on DU since 2004, officially joined in 2008, and have never seen things so toxic against one of the best candidates in recent years, apart from Prez O himself.

(15,438 posts)those so-called Bernie supporters will bail on him in the General Election should he, by some miracle, find a way to win it from Hillary Clinton (which, at this point, is an impossibility - thank god), and they'll happily cast their vote for any of the three clowns that will ultimately become the Republican nominee because they want to pick the next three supreme court justices to tear apart the hard-fought rights we've had in place for decades.
We Democrats aren't as easily hoodwinked as some on the far-left. We stick with the Democrat we know who is, consequently, the most experienced, most qualified candidate running on either side.

(7,480 posts)I took a few good slams a little while back..just sayin' that the DU Hillary bashing was getting pretty harsh, even though I was supporting Bernie then. Now I'm a bit more undecided, but Yes, it's only helping the repulsive Repug nominees to really flame Hillary here. If you don't support her, at least stop adding fuel to their (R's) fire.

(2,025 posts)I know you have different electoral cycles for President, Congress and the Senate. We just have one election for the Commons, even I can understand that. How will things go this November? Is it just a Presidential election or are other seats up for grabs too?

(2,025 posts)I don't know, all the polls are contradictory. At times it looks like the Teabag element will get kicked out, then it looks like they'll sweep back in.
In many ways I'm relieved I don't have a vote. I'm a Socialist so Sanders would be more suited to my position ideologically, but I'm also a pragmatist. Principled opposition only helps the rich man and I'd rather a moderate got in than another Tory.
In our leadership election I didn't vote for Corbyn, not because I don't agree with him but because I'm worried about his electability. Now he's in though he needs to be given a fair crack of the whip, disunity is more damaging than anything else.
It could go either way, Corbyn may galvanise the youth and the disaffected, who have either not voted or voted Green, and get swept to power on a tide of populism. Or we could go back to the 80s with principled, and pointless, opposition while the Tories play merry hell with our public services.

(37,449 posts)those jobs would have been gone for good. Even with the bailout parts of the auto industry were lost to foreign investors, especially the part industry. The large casting industry folded but now appears to be in a remake with investment in new techniques.

(7,480 posts)She needs to keep talking about this and connecting it to a lack of judgment by Sanders. Ask the question, "Will Sander's singular view of a subset of economic issues will handicap him when it comes to dealing with a myriad of issues as president?" Let it hang heavy in the air for a bit. Then answer her own question. "The American people can't afford to let that happen. Just like the people of Michigan couldn't afford to not have the auto industry bailed out at the cost of some 4 million jobs.

(250 posts)The TARP bill when sanders voted against it did not provide for relief of the auto industry. bush diverted money from the TARP by executive order well after the bill was passed. So how is it a fault of sanders, and a boon to Clinton if the bill wasn't about the auto industry when they voted on it.

He sounds great, so much in his ideals that we agree with -- right up until you hit a reality check like TARP, where compromise must occur or we get zero.

(7,480 posts)It really serves to underscore the importance of being able to tackle multiple issues, approach problems from various viewpoints, and bring together a coalition of people from varied backgrounds and viewpoints to bring forward realistic solutions. It's very hard to imagine a candidate that has built his whole campaign upon limited domestic issues. An issue that boils down to one thing. Out west, here in Nevada, we call that a "one trick pony."
