Angry White Males Propel Donald Trump—and Bernie Sanders

Posted on March 9, 2016 by admin
.....

Perhaps more interesting, angry white males are sustaining the Sanders campaign, not just the Trump campaign.

In Michigan, they kept him nearly even with Mrs. Clinton, offsetting her big advantage among women and among minorities. Among women, exit polls indicate, he finished just behind Mrs. Clinton. But among men, he won easily, 54% to 44%.

Like Mr. Trump, he seemed to do especially well among those who consider themselves stuck outside the economic mainstream. Among those who considered income inequality the top issue, he beat Mrs. Clinton 60% to 39%. And among those who think trade takes away jobs, he won 56% to 43%.

................................

In the end, it may well be that these voters are sufficient to propel Mr. Trump to the GOP nomination; we may well know for sure after primaries next week in the big industrial states of Ohio, Illinois and Missouri. But they probably aren’t enough to carry Mr. Sanders to the Democratic nomination.

Which would set up a fascinating battle in the fall. In a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, Mrs. Clinton beats Mr. Trump in a hypothetical general-election matchup, 51% to 38%. But among white men? He wins comfortably, 53% to 35%

gave a darn about the poor until the last recession hit a lot of white males and white wingers, and made them realize they are becoming a "minority." Suddenly, they give a dang and candidates like Trump and Sanders are attracting them. Where were they in the 1950s/60s or before while Blacks were segregated everywhere including in the military during WWII and couldn't even get an interview for a decent job.

They didn't want to join unions where non-White males got the same benefits as they did. They were always under the impression that they had an advantage because of their gender and race. Now, they're learning that they don't, and they want to burn down the house.

I am a female, and I'm mad. And, yes, Bernie's followers are mad. But, we're mad at the establishment. We want economic fairness, we want what other countries are able to give their citizens -- health care, knowing that food isn't a luxury, you know, life-sustaining things that the GOP say are entitlements. Bernie's followers are not racist, greedy, pigs, like the Trump supporters. To put the Trump and Sanders names together under "angry white male voters" is SO wrong. You are grasping for something to feel better about your candidate. Truth is, Hillary is more of the same establishment. This is the one chance for the face of politics to change. I want to help make that change happen. VOTE BERNIE.

more. She went through the ringer to try to change the health care system 20 years ago, but Republicans and Big Medical stood in the way. As the consequences of our system have worsened through the years, at least part of Big Medical knew things couldn't continue. Obama and other Dems were able to get enough opponents on board to get some change made.

If you are an angry woman, you should be backing Clinton at least as forcefully as you do Sanders.

who first thought BS walked on water. He's a smart young man and he has paid attention the last 8 years. Realizes that you can promise change and promise the world, but getting it done is another thing entirely. He is not a Bernie supporter any more, and it's not my doing, he made his own decision based on his own experiences and what he has had to deal with in the job market and college. I'm angry too, but my anger is directed toward the people who really deserve that anger, the Republicans.

I find it even more interesting that you refer to Trump groupies as "supporters", as opposed to "followers". The term "followers" has religious overtones, and it can be dangerous to deify any political figure.

We know what history has taught us about "followers". It almost always ends up badly for those who are being lead, and equally bad for those of us who don't care much for following. I don't know if you're old enough to remember Jonestown, but that's what worship of a human being reminds me of.

Not really old enough to remember Jonestown (I'm a model '75) but I've read about it. It is chilling language.

That's one of the things I like about Hillary supporters. While we cheer for her and work for her and hope with all our hearts that she'll be Madam President come January, I have yet to see one of us refuse to accept that there are things she could have done and should do better. There's no refusal to hear criticism that comes from an honest place.

Unfortunately, the people on DU outside of the HRC group criticise with hatred in their hearts, calling her "a piece of sh!t," "HiLIARy" a "murderer", and sundry other monsterizing terms. If you think the person you talk about is a monster, there is no discussion to be had.

It should be turned on its head - Bernie is winning states that are pretty securely blue, but he bombs in states that aren't in the safe column. Hillary, on the other hand, does a fantastic job in states where we need to do better, states where there is a chance that reasonable independents and republicans that are disgusted by their own nominee might cross over and give her the win, when she has that solidly Democratic base support to begin with.

I guess it is not enough to smear one Candidate, you have to denigrate a whole race of people and a gender to make some kind of point.

Good strategy, I guess.
I cannot put my finger on it but I have seen this stuff before in elections. Where? It will come to me.

25. I'd say above all else, the "angry" descriptor is the most prominent
Thu Mar 10, 2016, 03:27 PM
Mar 2016

Primarily, they're angry...
I think the other things (white, male, young, etc) that could be
descriptors are mostly coincidental to the types of anger that
are drawn in (angry at WS, angry at government, angry at
Clinton, angry at Obama, angry about student debt, etc). It's
the anger that most unites the group though...which is probably
why BS supporters who try to promote reason over fervor are
often tossed out. They don't want someone to "mellow their
harsh" ha!
So, of course, a lot of these topics of anger have crossover with
others...Tea Party and libertarians for example...and the two
cross quite frequently, since the anger is the most important
part apparently.

I've been angry since the 2000 election. I'm angry when I watch abortion rights stripped away. I'm angry at the persistence of racism. I'm angry about housing prices. I do what I can about these things and just plod through life. But I'm never going to think that by going to a rabble-rousing evangelical style rally with a bunch of people cheering what they want to hear without thinking about the reality of it that I'll change anything.

minority shouldn't impede on anyone else's rights. But thanks to the hate that is spread through talk radio, the "white male" feels that his very survival is at stake because blacks, Dreamers, LGBT, women and many more minorities are demanding equal footing. The two snake oil salesmen have tapped into that, and I think it's equally divisive, and nothing to be proud of.
