Ecuador, Chile Sign More Energy Cooperation Contracts
QUITO, July 22 (BERNAMA-NNN-Xinhua) -- Ecuador and Chile signed a joint declaration on bilateral long-term energy buy-sell contracts.
The document was signed by Ecuador's Coordinating Minister for Strategic Sectors Rafael Poveda and Chile's Electricity Minister Maximo Pacheco at a ceremony chaired by Ecuadoran Vice President Jorge Glas, who is currently acting president while President Rafael Correa is on vacation.
The accord with Chile is part of a project known as the Andean Electrical Interconnection System, under which the two nations, together with Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, have been working to create a regional electricity market, according to a presidency statement.
"The project aims to build an Andean electrical corridor in which the region's countries will be interconnected electrically, allowing the exchange of energy and the optimal use of the great energy resources available," Glas said.
As several hydroelectric plants near completion, Ecuador will become a renewable energy exporter in 2016, he added.
