Peru's 2013 poverty rate down by almost 2%

A new report from Peru’s National Institute for Statistics and Information shows that half a million Peruvians rose above the poverty level in 2013.

According to Peru21, the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica e Informatica (INEI), the nation’s poverty rate fell from 25.8% to 23.9%, a decrease of 1.9%, or around 490,000 people.

INEI head Alejandro Vilchez told press that “Close to a half million people, 490,000 people, left poverty in 2013. In the last two years, one million people have left the condition of poverty.”
