La Paz--Two men accused of involvement in a suspected foreign mercenary plot to kill Bolivian President Evo Morales were sentenced to nearly six years in prison.
Attorney General Ramiro Guerrero said Mario Tadic of Croatia and Elod Toaso, a Hungarian, were sentenced to five years and 10 months behind bars after being convicted of "armed uprising against the security and sovereignty of the state."
Tadic and Toaso are accused of belonging to a band of mercenaries led by Bolivian-Croatian national Eduardo Rozsa, a veteran of the Balkan wars of the early 1990s.
Rozsa was shot dead by Bolivian police in 2009 in the eastern city of Santa Cruz along with Irishman Michael Dwyer and Romanian-Hungarian Arpad Magyarosi.
The Bolivian government said the men had been hired by a wealthy businessman in the region to launch a revolt and the assassination of leftist leader Morales.

(14,732 posts)enough international attention. An international 'plot' by the gang that couldn't plot straight composed of a Croat, a Hungarian, a Bolivian, a Hungarian and a Romanian. Sounds like something Bill O'Reilly dreamed up.

(14,732 posts)I have never expressed an opinion on Libya. As for my experience in Viet Nam, the less said the better.

(20,582 posts)Sad though that you can't control the research and opinions done and given by others, it seems. Because you have no interest in Libya or Viet Nam ............ so what??? Is that supposed to mean something when it comes to Latin America?
Read.
Lots out there.
And again, sorry ...... but history doesn't change, no matter how hard you try.

(90,061 posts)Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Péter Szijjártó has called upon Hungarys ambassador accredited to Bolivia to assist the repatriation of Előd Tóásó, the Hungarian who has been illegally imprisoned in the country for almost six years. Mr. Szijjártó ordered both the ambasador and the consul of Hungarys embassy in Buenos Aires to personally correspond with local authorities to enable Mr. Tóásós return to Hungary as soon as possible.
The Hungarian national was sentenced to five years and ten months in jail by a Bolivian court for taking part in an armed rebellion together with his accomplice, Bolivian-Croatian dual citizen Mario Tadic. As both men had already served their sentence prior to the court decision, they are expected to be released soon.
The case broke out in April 2009 after police raided the hideout of a suspected terrorist cell apparently planning the assassination of President Evo Morales and violent secession from the country at a hotel in the city of Santa Cruz. During the police raid, Bolivian-Hungarian-Croatian national Eduardo Rózsa Flores, Transylvanian Hungarian Árpád Magyarosi and Irishman Michael Dwyer were killed and the two survivors Mr. Tóásó and Mr. Tadic were arrested. The pair have been kept in custody together with the other 37 defendants in the case ever since.

(160,516 posts)Hungarian citizen Elod Toaso (R) and Bolivian-Croatian Mario Tadic, are seen during their trial in La Paz February 20, 2015. A court in La Paz on Friday sentenced Toaso to five years and 10 months in prison on charges of armed uprising against the security and sovereignty of the state. Toaso, along with Tadic, survived a 2009 shootout with police in the opposition stronghold of Santa Cruz that ended in the deaths of Bolivian-Hungarian Eduardo Rozsa Flores, Romanian-Hungarian Arpad Magyarosi, and Irish citizen Michael Dwyer. (90,061 posts)I was thinking of these guys, but that's another place, just the same MO.
The spook business seems to be attracting a lower quality type of personnel.
But it does deserve to be mentioned here that the British government has a long history of exactly this sort of underhanded and mealy-mouthed activity in Latin America too, so one ought not ASSUME it was Uncle Sugar, or even really a government, the local Grand Poohbahs are even more violent than we are, they just lack our means.
