Odd fact surfaced after Pinera's administration attempted to erase "dictatorship" references.

Never expected to see this, of course!

SANTIAGO — The decision to change references to the military rule of General Augusto Pinochet from “dictatorship” to “military regime” sparked controversy around the world. Alicia Lira, President of the Association of Relatives of Victims of Political Execution, described the move as “a serious offence to victims of state terrorism.”

New controversies emerged when it was revealed a member of the National Council of Education, Alfredo Ewing Pinochet, was a part of the secret police during the dictatorship. More than 3,000 people were disappeared or killed during the Pinochet rule, which lasted between 1973 and 1990 with more than 40,000 people suffering torture.

Former President Eduardo Frei stated, “History cannot be changed by a decree or a law.”

The move has been criticized worldwide, with many saying it is an attempt to whitewash history.
