A new species of giant tortoise has been discovered by scientists in the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador.

The tortoise, which was found through genetic testing, is the 15th known species on the archipelago – four of which are already extinct.

Its discovery was announced in a paper published online by PLOS One, and confirmed by the Galapagos National Park Twitter feed.

It reads: “After years of study, a new species of tortoise has been identified in Galapagos.”
