Guatemala's First Ever Female Vice President Sent Back to
Published 18 January 2016

A Guatemalan judge has ruled that former Vice President Roxana Baldetti must return to prison by next Friday.

Former Guatemalan and the country’s first ever female Vice President Roxana Baldetti has been ordered to return to a women's prison in Santa Teresa Monday after her plea to extend her hospital stay was denied.

Baldetti was interned at a private hospital in November after falling ill to a bacterial infection.

After hearing testimony from doctors from the National Institute of Forensic Science, Judge Miguel Angel Galvez ruled that Baldetti must return to prison by next Friday.

Baldetti resigned as vice president May 8, 2015 and was arrested by police in August on charges of corruption. She is accused of involvement in a massive corruption scandal known as “La Linea” or The Line, a US$130 million operation to defraud the country’s customs service.
