President Evo Morales's ex-girlfriend paid the son's family to pretend he was hers before Morales launched a referendum to let him run a fourth term.

A CNN reporter testified before the Attorney General of Bolivia on Thursday in an ongoing investigation against the ex-girlfriend of President Evo Morales for paying a child to pretend he was their son. A second reporter, who interviewed the child in a program that was never aired, will be summoned as a witness on Friday, July 22.

The child had arrived with a mask accompanied by his real father, who was paid between US$5,000 and US$15,000 by ex-girlfriend Gabriela Zapata to use his son for the smear campaign. The journalists acknowledged that it was a setup but did not denounce the situation.

Morales recently accused CNN of lying and conspiring against the progressive governments. The case of the alleged son made the news two weeks before the February referendum to allow Morales to run a fourth term.

Five people were apprehended in the case, charged with human trafficking and smuggling, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and other charges. Zapata was also found to have bought the family a piece of land and to have covered the boy’s high school room and board.
