"Venezuelan immigrant communities yesterday marched for the reelection of President Hugo Chavez, and proposed a new law for their greater social inclusion.
Around 17,000 immigrants, mainly of Colombian, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, and Haitian origin, marched through central Caracas yesterday. Participants mentioned recognition and inclusion in social programs as reasons for their support of Chavez.
Julia Puello, of the Fellow Countries Movement, said to public channel VTV that he [Chavez] has allowed us access to all of the missions and social programs that the government grants
were no longer treated like animals to be sent to the border
were respected human beings and ready to work for the country.
Immigrants in Venezuela, including those without legal documentation, have access to certain free public services, such as health and education, as well as subsidised food networks."

(160,452 posts)Very interesting their new country is accomodating these war-weary people, and trying to help them step into their new lives. Amazing.
They are lucky the right-wing scum of the earth aren't in power there at the moment, aren't they? They would make certain the government would funnel all the financial assistance to the wealthy, just the way they used to have it.

(20,582 posts)I'm so glad they're finding refuge. I was just reading another article about the opposition party's (hidden) goals - the ones even their own members are dropping out because of, and it's a good thing these people are already there and enrolled in the programs they are, imo. I'm getting excited about the election ..... I know I have no stake in it, but just thinking of how far the people of Venezuela have come and how badly the majority of them want to keep progressing has really touched my heart. Plus, it's on my birthday! I've already made my wish ....... Chavez is in!
Well, unless there's another coup attempt, but the support he has will hopefully prevent that from happening.
I was just reading too about 'the other Sept' 11th' - the coup in Chile. Very sad to read of again.

(20,582 posts)But I guess when you're trying to discredit something that's actually really good in terms of a large number of people feeling safe and having basic human needs met ...... you have to pretend something or other. It's going to be a long month, heh?
