Brazilian attorneys to call for Temer's impeachment
Sao Paulo, May 21 (efe-epa).- The Order of Attorneys of Brazil (OAB) announced on Sunday that it will call for the opening of impeachment proceedings against President Michel Temer, who has been tainted in a corruption scandal.
The request will be made in the coming days by the OAB in the lower house of Congress, and the head of the congressional body, Rodrigo Maia, a Temer ally, will have to decide whether or not to accept it.
The OAB met on Saturday and after more than seven hours of discussion approved in a 25-1 vote a report recommenting that the organization present a request for impeachment designed to result in Temer's removal from office.
The lower house has already received about 10 impeachment requests against Temer after a businessman revealed that the president participated in a corruption scheme and tried to buy the silence of Eduardo Cunha, the former head of the Chamber of Deputies currently imprisoned for corruption.
Cunha was the one who spearheaded the drive on Aug. 31 that led to the ouster of former President Dilma Rousseff, thus clearing the way for then-Vice President Temer to take over the presidency,
The opposition and some parties who up until last week were part of the government alliance have also called for Temer's resignation, although he has ruled out voluntarily leaving office.
