Brazil to deploy military troops during next month's municipal voting in Rio de Janeiro

Brazil to deploy military troops during next month's municipal voting in Rio de Janeiro
By The Associated Press September 29, 2012

BRASILIA, Brazil - Brazil's Defence Ministry says troops will be used to ensure peaceful voting and campaigning in Rio de Janeiro ahead of next week's municipal elections.

The ministry says in a statement posted on its website that army and marine troops will start being deployed on Monday in crime-ridden slums in the city's north and west.

The statement doesn't say how many troops will be used.

Voters in 5,565 cities and towns across Latin America's biggest country will elect mayors and municipal councilmen on Oct.7.
