Mujica to Uribe: 'Tone Down and Contribute to Colombia's Peace'

Published 6 January 2018

. . .

As the peace process advances in Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos, government officials and representatives of the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force party, FARC, met Thursday in Cartagena to review the implementation of the final peace treaty signed November 2016.

Among the external verifiers of the treaty’s implementation were Jose Mujica, former president of Uruguay, and Felipe Gonzalez, the former Spanish president.

During a speech after the review meeting, Mujica called on Colombians to embrace peace and stressed the importance of this process not only for Colombia but for the entire region. "If this fails, Latin American history fails."

He then went on to criticize the voices against the peace process saying that “those who do not know and measure the long-term cost of war do not value peace,” adding that you cannot ask people to give up arms then put them in jail for 30 years.

If Peace in Colombia Fails, Latin America will Fail, Mujica Says

Cartagena, Colombia, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) Former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica noted at a meeting to review Colombia''s Peace Agreement that the cost of tolerance is infinitively lower than the cost of war.

'This cannot roll back. If this peace process in Colombia fails, Latin America will fail,' noted the ex-head of State, who attended a government-FARC meeting in this city on Thursday, along with former Spanish President Felipe Gonzalez.

'We have to learn to tolerate, to live with difference,' stressed Mujica, who pointed out that it is time for reconciliation.

'I wish with all my heart that the ghost of war does not walk the streets, the hills, the mountain ranges, the forests of Latin America,' he said at the end of the meeting, at which the Alternative Revolutionary Force of the Common (FARC) party expressed concern about the difficult time the peace process is going through.
