THE United States Coast Guard has found a missing crew member who was lost at sea for 22 hours after falling overboard from a cruise ship near Cuba.

Coast Guard officials said the 33-year-old Filipino crew member was seen going overboard on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Getaway on Saturday, about 45kms northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba.

The alarm was raised about 3.20pm and officials dispatched planes and a cutter that searched more than 4221sq km.

The unidentified crew member was found alive around 1pm on Sunday after a staff member from another cruise liner the Carnival Glory saw a person in the water.

A cruise ship worker who fell overboard has been rescued by a second ship full of holidaymakers after spending 22 hours stranded in the Gulf of Mexico.

The 33-year-old crew member plunged into the sea from the deck of the Norwegian Getaway around 28 miles north west of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, on Saturday.

US Coast Guard ships spent hours attempting to locate the man, but called off the search after covering more than 1,600 square miles to no avail.

“We saw the cruise ship made a U-turn and started heading back we noticed that the crew members were using binoculars trying to find the crewmember in the ocean,” passenger Eddy Lowinger told CBS Miami.

(CNN)Do you believe in miracles? A crew member for Norwegian Cruise Line probably does after he fell overboard near Cuba, then was rescued almost a full day later by another cruise ship.

Witnesses saw the 33-year-old crew member fall off the Norwegian Getaway into the water about 28 miles northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba at 3:20 p.m. ET Saturday, the US Coast Guard said in a statement. A Coast Guard airplane, a HC-144 Ocean Sentry, immediately began searching for him.

The next day, a hotel steward aboard the Carnival Glory spotted the man in the water around 1 p.m. ET about 21 miles north of Cuba, Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement. The steward told the Glory's bridge officers, who reduced the ship's speed, reversed course and lowered a lifeboat to save the man.

The Norwegian crew member, whose name has not yet been publicly released, is being treated by the Carnival Glory's medical team and is listed in stable condition.

Miraculous rescue: Cruise ship crew member recovered by another cruise ship after he went overboard
Monday, July 02, 2018 01:04PM

COZUMEL, Mexico (WABC) -- A Norwegian Cruise Line crew member apparently treaded water for almost 22 hours before being spotted in the waters off Cuba by the crew of a passing Carnival Cruise ship.

The man was plucked from the water and was taken to Cozumel to be checked by doctors.

Carnival spokeswoman AnnMarie Matthews said the 33-year-old man didn't have any safety device on and that they "can only surmise that he was likely treading water the entire time."

He went overboard from the Norwegian Getaway and had been drifting since at least Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a search for him Saturday night after looking for hours.
