Venezuela 'drone attack': Six arrests made

5 August 2018

Six people have been arrested in Venezuela for involvement in an apparent assassination attempt on President Nicolás Maduro, the interior minister says.

Nestor Reverol said they were part of a group that loaded two drones with explosives and set them off during a military parade in the capital Caracas.

Mr Maduro has warned the perpetrators face "maximum punishment".

He has blamed Colombia for the incident but provided no evidence.

Colombia said the accusation was "baseless".

The government has also pointed the finger at the opposition, prompting fears of a new crackdown.

I find it curious that the agents of Chavismo make journalists destroy any evidence that they may have filmed during the "assassination" attempt instead of turning it over to investigators.

CNP Caracas: Eleven journalists were arrested and forced to erase recorded material
The Cooperator | August 5, 2018

Caracas.- Edgar Cárdenas, Secretary of Organization of the National Association of Journalists section of the Capital District, said that the trade union body has insisted that the Venezuelan Government adopted as a state policy the aggression, harassment and persecution of journalists and the free press; trying to prevent citizens from receiving the necessary information to be able to form a criterion about reality and distinguish the truth from the lie.

According to a press release, for the union leader, the excessive action of the military and police bodies is serious, who constantly lash out against journalists and other press workers who only "comply with the sacred duty of informing."

Cárdenas reported that yesterday, August 4, during the events that occurred on Avenida Bolivar in Caracas, 11 journalists and media workers were arbitrarily detained for no reason ; being also threatened and forcing them to erase the recorded material during the coverage of the events; which shows that we are in the presence of a government that does not believe in press freedom, which translates into a serious attack against freedom of expression, press and information.

Journalists are responsible for seeking information, so there can be no type of limitation in the performance of our professional practice.

The Law on the Exercise of Journalism in its article 3 states that "the journalist's own functions are in the exercise of his profession, the search, preparation and writing of news ", likewise article 5 reads "the National Association of Journalists ... is custodian and defender of the right of the people to be and be informed truthfully and in full and, at the same time, the right of the journalist to free access to information sources ".

For the director of the CNP, the National Government must guarantee the free exercise of journalism; likewise, it is the obligation of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic and the Ombudsman's Office to initiate an immediate investigation that may determine responsibility for these acts, obtaining sanctions for those responsible for them.
