(16,646 posts)The internet was designed to be highly distributed. This kind of blocking is supposed to be hard to do. Have countries been successful in arranging their backbones so they run through very narrow sections?

(2,412 posts)but my understanding is that there is technology (employed by various police states) that block access to every website not specifically sanctioned by that government. North Korea and Cuba, for example. The government is the gatekeeper of all information coming into and out of their networks.
Others use the tech to block specific sites, or specific portals or addresses. China and Russia do this. Again, this is layman's terms from a person who knows nothing about the tech.
Venezuela under Chavismo has essentially nationalized all of the communication infrastructure over the last 20 years. TV, radio, newsprint, and digital media. They have in the last few months blocked social media apps (ie WhatsApp) at their convenience.
