Chilean police officers in preventive prison for torture

Santiago de Chile, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) Six police officers accused of tortures and sexual abuse against a young male student were held in preventive detention by decision of the Seventh Guarantee Court of this capital.

Josue Moreira, a Medicine student at the Catholic University, denounced being attacked physically and sexually by the police officers, after being arrested on Monday, October 21, while he assisted injured people in the riots.

Among the reasons given to decree the precautionary measure, there are physical examinations that clearly show the injuries suffered by this young man.

Counselor María Elena Santibáñez explained that the young man was held in custody and unarmed, and instead of passing him to detention control, he was beaten all night; and the most serious thing is that he was tortured not only to punish him but also as a form of discrimination for his sexual orientation.

The judge who took the case also said that in order to issue the ruling, she took into account the status of the accused, since it is especially serious that police officers are involved in cases of abuse of power, considering the have the monopoly of force.

The court ruled 120 days to conduct the investigation, and the officers will be held in custody in a policy station.
