Colombia's Supreme Court to turn offices upside down as wiretapping scandal expands

by Adriaan Alsema January 13, 2020

Colombia’s Supreme Court will begin a thorough inspection of its offices after listening devices were found in the office of the magistrate investigating former President Alvaro Uribe, Cable Noticias reported Sunday.

The inspections will begin Monday amid a growing scandal over the reportedly illegal wiretapping by the National Army of the Supreme Court, lawmakers and journalists.

The scandal is eerily similar to a 2008 wiretapping scandal when Uribe was president and his aides ordered the wiretapping of the Supreme Court while investigating ties between politicians and now-defunct paramilitary group AUC.

The Uribe family’s deja vu

At the time, the Supreme Court was investigating the former president’s disgraced cousin Mario. This time, the court is investigating Uribe himself.

You may recall, Judi, that one of the last major scandals of Macri's tenure was the revelation that he had been routinely (and illegally) keeping tabs on most or all federal judges, as well as the Supreme Court justices.

The reason? He thought he'd be re-elected, and wanted to make sure the judiciary protected him and his allies - and, of course, that they went after his opponents (especially Cristina Kirchner, about whom he was obsessed in much the same way Trump is obsessed with Obama).

Having something you can use against each and every judge would've practically guaranteed that.

Definitely the kind of thing Cheeto wishes he could get away with.

They had so many people under their thumbs by the time that one man decided to try to fight them, himself, by exposing their actions. Of course desperation entered into his choice but he also had to face the very likely possibility he would be murdered by people vicious enough to do what they had done already.

Hope they won't double back and seek revenge upon him still.

I hope I understood it well enough to make sense. Their methods were so devious, and complex, and determined. They thoroughly intended to succeed, growing more powerful day by day.

If only the crimes they committed can be prosecuted, that there are enough courageous people willing to do something about them and the damage they did to profit from their undeserved positions. Hoping their connections will not save them.

I've come to believe the big orange blob has some ways to coerce compliance in the House and Senate, as well, sandensea. The things they are doing completely contradict all their earlier lies and they are being shown to be utter puppets in his hands, just as he is in Putin's.

So glad you mentioned the unfinished business Argentina has against Macri. Things will not be right until he is brought to justice.
