Chileans denounce efforts to pardon oppressors of dictatorship
Santiago, Chile, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) The efforts by the Government and right-wing parties to change the prison regime for home arrest for oppressors of the dictatorship who are serving time in the Punta Peuco prison were condemned again in Chile.
In a press conference in this capital, representatives of human rights organizations and the victims of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) demanded that the so-called Humanitarian Act, urgently submitted to Congress by President Sebastian Piñera, is not approved.
Chilean Human Rights Commission Chairman Carlos Margotta pointed out that the initiative is unconstitutional, is against the opinion of the majority of Chilean society and would make international agencies target the Government for violating international treaties on that issue.
He recalled that international law clearly establishes that the benefits for the penal population in general and those sentenced for crimes against humanity are based on different rules, and the latter must collaborate in the investigation, which has not happened in Chile's case.
Margotta assured that the oppressors who are serving time at the Punta Peuco prison not only have refused to collaborate and compensate the victims, but have not expressed remorse, and some of them have vindicated their crimes publicly.
