'We are hungry': protests and looting in Colombia as food distribution fails

by Adriaan Alsema April 16, 2020

Tensions in Colombia are growing as food supplies promised by President Ivan Duque to prevent hunger during a quarantine allegedly never arrived in some parts of the country.

Residents of poor parts of the capital Bogota and the country’s second largest city, Medellin, took to the street to protest on Tuesday and Wednesday claiming they never received promised aid.

While the protests in Medellin’s eastern 8th District remained peaceful, riot police clashed with protesters in Bogota’s southern Ciudad Bolivar district.

Looting was reported in several parts of Medellin, in Vichada’s capital Puerto Carreño and in Sincelejo, the capital of the northern Sucre province.

2. Oh,

You may have forgotten the link there.

Does anybody realize that we could be getting closer to that scenario? The food banks are running way over budget. SNAP benefits are not much at all and many people are still trying to qualify. Not to mention that, even if you and your family are starving, you may have to get rid of and assets you have before you can qualify.

The way it looks, there should also be a massive federal recognition and response to a looming food crisis.
