Mexico police open fire on femicide protest in Cancun

Human rights activists in Mexico have expressed indignation after police opened fire on protesters who tried to force their way into Cancún city hall during a demonstration against the country’s femicide crisis.

Four journalists were injured in the incident late on Monday, including two who suffered bullet wounds. Eight protesters were reportedly detained after the shooting.

The demonstration was called after the dismembered body of 20-year-old Bianca “Alexis” Lorenzana, was found, days after she disappeared. It was the latest in a string of grisly crimes against women and girls in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.
...
According to the state governor, Carlos Joaquín, responsibility lay with the local police chief, who ordered officers to open fire to disperse the crowd.

MEXICO CITY — 2020 has been, so far, the year of women’s rights protests in Mexico. This week, the police opened fire in a rally against femicides in the coastal city of Cancún, sparking more feminists protests in Mexico.

The protest came after the dismembered body of a 20-year-old woman was found.

The police fired its guns and pushed itself into the crowd to disperse it, after some protesters graffitied and damaged public buildings.

A man identified as a human rights teacher live streamed the scene, where he tries to calm the cops.

About a dozen people reported injuries, including some journalists. The police chief was later removed from charge.

Since then, several feminists groups across Mexico have rallied during the week. The president called for an investigation in Cancún, but he has blamed his opponents for inciting the protests.

Approximately 10 women are murdered in Mexico every day.
