Covid-19 has drastically reduced the difference between the number of births and deaths recorded in the capital of São Paulo in the last year. At least that's according to data released by Arpen-SP (Association of Natural People Registrars of the State of São Paulo), obtained by Folha earlier this week.

Last month, the 12,779 death certificates registered in the city of São Paulo were equivalent to 94.9% of the number of birth certificates issued in the same period (13,464). As a comparison, in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, the number of death records represented just 55.6%.

Last month, notaries in the city of São Paulo recorded a volume of deaths 66.2% higher than in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic in Brazil. The number of birth certificates was only 2.71% lower in the comparison between these two months. In the daily average, 434 birth certificates and 412 death certificates were issued last month.
