Brazilians stage nationwide protests against President Bolsonaro's COVID response

Brazilians staged protests against President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in at least 16 cities across the country on Saturday, carrying signs such as "Out with Bolsonaro" and "Impeachment now."

Bolsonaro's popularity has plummeted during the coronavirus crisis, which has killed more than 460,000 Brazilians as the far-right leader played down its severity, dismissed mask wearing and cast doubt on the importance of vaccines.

Organized by leftist political parties, unions and student associations, Saturday's protests in the capital Brasilia and in Rio de Janeiro were peaceful - but in the northeastern city of Recife, police threw tear gas and shot rubber bullets.

In São Paulo, Brazil's (and Latin America's) largest city, thousands of mask-wearing people blocked one the largest city's avenues.

One large balloon depicted Bolsonaro as a vampire.

It doesn't take long to recall the heavily financed right-wing protests held during the Presidency of Dilma Rousseff, while Bolsonaro was in Congress, protests in which the wealthy elitists turned out nearly weekly, it seemed, in an outright party mood, with giant yellow rubber ducks provided by some wealthy backers, as fun toys for the crowds, and mimes in the street, even actual naked folks showing up wearing high heels, to amaze and attract gawkers to the parades, people taking selfies with beaming, grinning police men, wealthy yuppie couples strolling with their expensive doggies while their nannies trudged along pushing their little pig faced infants in their giant strollers, people eating ice cream cones as they walked, and occassional tables and chairs where people could sit and refresh their fascist thirsts with wine, while getting some tropical sun, etc., etc.

They carried professionally created signs demanding the resignation of Dilma Rousseff. Bolsonaro dedicated his pro-impeachment vote of President Rousseff to the prison official who tortured her routinely while she was behind bars for being a rebel against the blood-thirsty fascist dictatorship, the entire movement was choreographed by the Brazilian right-wing, of course.

The protest images in the video above shows an entirely different realm of human beings. They are sincere people who are dead serious about what the heck has happened to Brazil under the thumb of Bolsonaro.

DU posters during the first round of protests some years ago were lucky to see posts from an extraordinary person living in Sao Paulo. We were also unlucky enough to be getting bombed by right-wing dirtbags with a particular obsession regarding Latin America who loved to attack the poster from Sao Paulo viciously, crudely, constantly, trying their best to keep her from posting real information, and actual photos taken by local photographers over a period of months. She brought personal, spendid, unique information giving spectacular background so they absolutely had to drive her away before too many more people would read her comments.

I have not forgiven them, will never forgive them, it was simply uncivilized, and stupid beyond endurance. I think of that poster regularly, wondering how she's doing with the criminally insane President at the helm.

A couple of them still stick their gnarly noses into DU in other forums, so I know if they see her around again they'll drag their Q-non butts over here to resume their job making asses of themselves again!

Long not live Bolsonaro! I hope these real protests will gain the support of the entire world of sane, decent people, who might join them in spirit, and work together to put the heat on this horrible President imposter.

Thank you for sharing the news clip, peppertree.

The main agendas are impeachment of the president, vaccine and emergency aid of R$ 600

Povo sem Medo and Brasil Popular, which bring together hundreds of organizations and led the marches on Saturday (29) against the Jair Bolsonaro government, will hold meetings this Tuesday (2) to decide on the continuation of the mobilizations.

The main agendas of the fronts are acceleration of vaccination, emergency aid of R$ 600 and an end to police violence.

The fronts are made up of opposition parties (PT, PSOL, PCdoB, PSB, among others), unions and social movements.

An assessment gathered by Folha from spokespersons for social movements and parties this Monday (31) is that the protests, which gathered thousands of people in 210 cities in Brazil and in 14 countries, were successful and escaped the traps because they occur in the pandemic.
