Brazilian Businessmen Fund Arms Campaign

News report consulted donations to 91 candidates; representatives of groups such as Riachuelo, Havan, and Localiza are among the funders

Sep.26.2022 1:37PM

Major businessmen, shooting club owners, gun store owners, and CACs (hunters, shooters, and collectors) help fund campaigns for candidates committed to the arms agenda.

. . .

The aforementioned donations are from candidates who receive support from Proarmas. The entity calls itself a movement in search of the "fundamental right" of self-defense and supports candidates for different positions in the October elections.

In common, they are all in favor of the re-election of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), a major advocate for arming the population. As Folha showed, Proarmas offered support to candidates who want to run for a seat in Congress in exchange for positions inside the cabinets.

Folha consulted the donations made to 91 candidates — some of whom have not yet provided partial accountability. Altogether they have already received more than R$50 million, R$100.1 thousand of which has been obtained through crowdfunding.
