Got a Scam Call today ....from this number 619-245-4623..A San Diego number

Said it was from Social Security, and that my social security number and account had been suspended. I called this number and the first thing they did is ask for my name. I said no, & asked, where am I calling, and who am I calling..They immediately hung up. This is a warning for others. I do not believe that the Social Security Administration ever does this. I also think it is against the law.

10. Me too, two of them in San Diego.

I could see their number on my machine when I screened. When I called it back they had no idea what I was talking about. My supermarket made an announcement to warn shoppers not to fall for it or send any money or give any info. There must have been a lot in San Diego.

7. An update : I followed up and called the Social Security Admin, and the San Diego Police Dept.

1. At Social Security Admin. I reported this, and the person who answered took down some info.
..............also, I was told to contact the San Diego Police...

2. I called the San Diego Police Department, waited for a while and when they finally answered, the officer told me they are getting lots of calls, but she asked did I send or give any money?...So, I said, No, I hung up on them.. Then the officer said, you have not been scammed, so if you want, call your local police department to report this. I live in a suburb near Chicago, don't know if I will go to the police..?? Hell, it was a phone call, and I hung up. San Diego Police did take down the number, but I was told unless the number took my money that nothing would be done....Then I was told to call my local police department to report it. Also the San Diego Police Officer told me to call the FBI. She said that the FBI covers this kind of crime.

8. That's a bit pedantic

"...but I was told unless the number took my money that nothing would be done..."

I get it, but that's a bit disingenuous. They are right, it would be a hard case to build until someone actually lost money. But they can use that info as part of an investigation. They just don't want to because these people are notoriously hard to catch. It doesn't even have to be anyone in the San Diego area. These days, the callers can be from anywhere. What really bothers me is the one place that COULD be detecting and addressing this is the phone company that handed out the phone number. These calls originate from somewhere and I suspect the volume alone could be enough to start detecting them and addressing the problem.

11. I just called that number twice and it rang for over

a minute each time before it hung up on me. I have the feeling they will not be using this number again. I wish they had answered since I had my own story ready to screw with them.
