Just wondering....

Not a single one of these jobs, and nothing that I've ever heard from my friend Mike Rowe has been gender specific.

Would love to see this crossposted in GD.

3. Because I believe it to be of interest to men, which doesn't mean it wouldn't be to women

I'm not so sure we don't have more female readers anyway. With 144 subscribers and nowhere near that many contributors, one can only speculate.

4. If the work is strenuous, dangerous, unsanitary or involves toxins, it's probably dominated by men.

It is silly to pretend that the reality is something else.

It is the flip side of the "porn" discussion.

It is men who have always -and still do- bear the brunt of the back-breaking, degrading labor.

And for those women who wish to bring up hotel maids or waitresses, let me say that I am not denying that many women perform difficult labor. Having said that, across the world, I venture to guess that it is the men who perform such labor by a much higher proportion.

6. My reasons for posting it here were not to be divisive

I just don't post that many OPs in GD and for subjects that I think warrant serious discussion I prefer to post here. There's no shortage of women who engage in hard labor that is degraded by society. I think the impact is disparate to men at the extremes of the things you mentioned, but by no means unique. I value the labor of women and men and I think we'd have a much better society if more people did as well. Most of Europe is way ahead of us on this.
