Men Sentenced To Longer Prison Terms Than Women For Same Crimes, Study Says

If you're a convicted criminal, the best thing you can have going for you might be your gender.

A new study by Sonja Starr, an assistant law professor at the University of Michigan, found that men are given much higher sentences than women convicted of the same crimes in federal court.

The study found that men receive sentences that are 63 percent higher, on average, than their female counterparts.

Starr also found that females arrested for a crime are also significantly more likely to avoid charges and convictions entirely, and twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.

1. So on average, a woman caught smoking a joint will get 40 years in prison, and a man will get 50.

Because God knows there is nothing more important than continuing to fill our prisons with non-violent pot smokers. Gotta let the violent criminals out to make more room.

like murder, theft and the like.

I entirely agree that filling our prisons with drug addicts is foolish (that should be addressed another way, or not at all for casual marijuana users).

But I don't think that was the focus of this article.

3. I know, i just get frustrated with the fact that we fill our prisons with nonviolent drug offenders.

I have no problem with locking up violent people of either gender, but right now we let murderers out so we can make room for the cancer granny who got caught with a pot plant in her garden.

4. There's no telling what mischief cancer-granny could get in to

for our safety she must be detained.

Oh and any cop should be able to stop any citizen and search him/her if he thinks he smells drugs. Not any specific kind, just drugs.

What's interesting about this new study is that it seems to focus just on gender and dives into it a bit deeper. What's also interesting is that it appears as if it's a far bigger penalty to be male than it is to be black or any other minority group when it comes to incarceration.

Yes, definitely another prime example of male privilege in action.

6. It is interesting

Who in their right mind would claim blacks are privileged? On health, education, and in the court system they seem to suffer compared to whites on most every metric.

And yet that same gap exists, and is much larger, between men and women with men suffering in those same areas and that proves men are privileged.

7. The idea of "male privilege" is intellectually dishonest

It uses the valid concept of white privilege as a segue which alleviates one from the responsibility of building arguments on any sort of firm foundation.

An incarcerated black man is there primarily because he's a man, and secondarily because he's black. It is a double dose of legal disadvantage.

If you're black, your odds of going to jail are 6x greater than if you're white.
If you're male, your odds of going to jail are 11x greater than if you're female.

And for no demographic are boys more likely or equally like to graduate high school. (the smallest disparity is among asians, the largest among blacks).
